Overview

GLUEPS-AR is a system aimed to support multiple aspects of the orchestration of across-spaces learning situations.

One of the purposes of GLUEPS-AR is to enable teachers to deploy their learning designs into the technological settings in which they will enact the learning situations. Learning design is an approach that aims to allow teachers make explicit their pedagogical ideas by using standard languages interpretable by computers, in order to enable them to share and reuse the designs. GLUEPS-AR extends the architecture of its predecessor system, GLUE!-PS, which enabled the deployment of learning designs, which could have been created in different authoring tools, into multiple web-based distributed learning environments. Thus, GLUEPS-AR, broadening the scope to environments including different physical and virtual spaces, enables teachers to deploy their learning designs in Ubiquitous Learning Environments (ULEs). Furthermore, GLUEPS-AR sets up these ULEs, by integrating learning environments in different spaces [e.g., using web Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs), Web 2.0 tools, mobile Augmented Reality (AR) clients and Virtual Globes (VGs) used as 3D Virtual Worlds (3DVWs)]. In addition, GLUEPS-AR enables teachers to choose among multiple existing systems for the creation of the ULE. In such ULE, GLUEPS-AR allows the flow of learning artifacts between the different spaces, for instance, a Google Docs document could be accessed from a VLE in a first activity, with a mobile AR client in a specific physical position in a subsequent activity, and simultaneously from a VG used as a 3DVW and the web VLE in a final activity. Thus, GLUEPS-AR enables the integration of the different activities carried out across spaces. GLUEPS-AR also supports other multiple orchestration aspects, e.g., acting as a control panel that helps teachers manage and be aware of the learning situation.

GLUEPS-AR has been integrated with the Bucket-Server system, in order to enable the teachers to introduce learning buckets in their learning designs, thus including a certain flexibility in the management of learning artifacts during the enactment of across-spaces learning situations.

Supported learning design tools. Currently, the GLUEPS-AR prototype supports three learning design languages/tools (albeit it will be extended to support others):

Supported VLEs. Currently, the GLUEPS-AR prototype supports the following VLEs (albeit it will be extended to support others):

Supported mobile AR clients. Currently, the GLUEPS-AR prototype supports the following AR clients (albeit it will be extended to support others):

Supported VGs. Currently, the GLUEPS-AR prototype supports the following VGs (albeit it will be extended to support others):

Supported external learning tools. GLUEPS-AR also lets you select learning tools such as Google Docs, Google Spreadsheets, Google Presentations, Picasa, Noteflight, Doodle, Wookie Widgets and many others. Please visit the GLUE! page for more information.

GLUEPS-AR is a research effort of the Intelligent and Cooperative Systems Group (GSIC-EMIC). The research and development of GLUEPS-AR has been partially funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness Project TIN2011-28308-C03-02, and the Autonomous Government of Castilla y León Project VA277U14. The GLUEPS-AR system has been developed mainly by Juan A. Muñoz-Cristóbal and Javier E. Hoyos-Torío. GLUEPS-AR has been developed by modifying and extending GLUE!-PS.
